9/7/24 Marci

While I was making a goodbye card for Conor at my albergue, I met a Mexican woman named Marci. Initially I was a bit annoyed with her conversation was trying to finish my art but it turned out to be one of my most pivotal conversations on the camino.

Marci, at 81 years old, was completing her fourth camino. She walked her first pilgrimage 11 years ago when her husband died. It was a way to grieve and find her way without her husband. Last year her children, who live in Mexico, wanted to celebrate her 80th birthday. She said she wanted to celebrate it in Santiago de Compostela with her family. This was a big ask for her children as they have jobs and school, but they did whatever they had to do as they recognized that this was what mom wanted and didn’t know how much longer they’d have her. She recognizes that she can’t walk an entire stage so he will walk half of it and stay wherever that is. It will take her longer but all she has is time.

She seemed like a tiny holy woman, saying she is living the best years of her life. She said that the pilgrimage helps her to live in the present and she is grateful–every day is a gift.
