Detachment
In Ignatius’ first principle and foundation, he determined that for one to love God freely one had to have indifference–the ability to let go of whatever doesn’t allow me to love God or others while engaging in what does. He maintained that humans are made to praise, revere and serve God– and in the process actualize themselves.. And the things of this world are here only to help us with this end. Thus is is important to make ourselves indifferent to all created things as much as we are able, so that we do not necessarily want health rather than sickness, riches rather than poverty, honor rather than dishonor, a long rather than a short life, and so in all the rest, so that we ultimately desire and choose only what is most conducive to the end for which God created us.
We might call it equanimity before choices. I call it detachment–not desiring something/someone or avoiding something /someone too much. I would also say it calls us to detachment to preferred outcomes–like accomplishment, success, and end–and be at peace with how things turn out. With the national elections in the US, I am trying to have detachment to political outcomes–trusting that ultimately God is in charge. It is not a relinquishing of responsibility but rather acknowledgement that there are things outside of my control.
While I have not been in a total black out of news on the camino, I have been trying to limit my consumption of news in order to be more centered and at peace.
