San Luis Potosí Day 1

 San Luis Potosí

It has been some time since I have been interested in the “Silver Cities” of Mexico–the cities north of Mexico City whose initial wealth by the Spanish was based on the mining of silver and gold. I had visited Guanajuato, one of those cities, which is a charming colonial city of cobblestones, baroque churches and roving, singing cervantinas. But there were the silver cities of San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas.

San Luis Potosi is about a mile above sea level–providing chilly nights but warm days while we were there. It was named after St. Louis, king of France and was given the appellation Potosi after the lucrative but infamous mine of Potosi in Bolivia after silver and gold deposits were found near the city. It is presently known for its manufacturing base and is a UNESCO world heritage site. I knew San Luis Potosi as the home of the Servant of God, Conchita Cabrera de Armida, a nineteenth century mystic whose cause for sainthood was advanced by the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit Fathers in the central valley. Visiiting SLP was on my bucket list.

As a young man, the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit provided guidance and education to  our community in Parlier, so I knew of Blessed Conchita. I knew she was from San Luis Potosi so I guess it was not surprising that the Apostolate of the Cross was made known to her in a Jesuit church.

En esta parroquia en 1894, Dios hizo ver a su sierva Maria Concepcion Cabrera de Armida la Cruz del Apostolado, como símbolo de las obras y de la espiritualidad de la cruz.

Richard and I had a little snack in this small cute restaurant.

The smoothies were great but Richard thought the portion of fries were not generous.
