It was a full weekend, so when Richard suggested going to the canonization mass for Giorgio Frassetti and Carlo Acutís, I was hesitant–the heart was willing but the body was not.
I decided to go. I got up at 6:00 am and left at 6:30 to get to the line at 6:45. As I left Ottaviano Metro station, there was a looooong line to get in. Slowly it moved. After two hours, I was in the piazza. There was no space to get to the space that had seats, so I stood in the sun, crowded with people from Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago, and Spain. Before mass officially started, there was a declaration by prelates to the pope, why these two young men should be saints. Then there was the litany of the saints was recited. Carlos’ mom was featured momentarily on the video screen. After the declaration, Mass was celebrated. For communion, an army of priests was sent to the various stations in St. Peter’s square. The priest to my quadrant stationed himself right where I was so after receiving communion, everyone cam in my direction so left to the colonnade where there were less people. And I waited there.
I am glad I went despite the sun and the crowds. Perhaps a friendship can develop with Giorgio and Carlo and me.
| Getting to St. Peter's at 6:45 was not early enough to get a good place in the piazza. Some folks got in line at 4:00 am. Next time. |
