 La Paz, Bolivia

We left this morning at 7:30 am from Puno to La Paz via Copacabana near Lake Titicaca. I had preferred the faster, less scenic route but I am glad I went this way as the landscape with barren hills, snowcapped mountains, the sapphire blue lake, billowing clouds, rain, and Quechua communities made for some dramatic vistas.

After a short pit stop our bus entered a drab town of dirt roads and brown brick homes and businesses. Many of the people were Quechua people going about their business in the cold rain. But there were businesses: auto shops, internet, stores, repair shops. But the whole ensemble together made me feel happy. It was as if I were entering civilization and could orient myself to the community. Later I found out that it was simply the beginning of the sprawling suburbs of La Paz, a large city of little brown boxes nestled in a ravine. Curious thing what cities do for me.
